Abstract

The article analyzes the relationship between truth-telling and history in Rousseau, through his neutralization of the aristocratic historico-political tradition. By focusing on the methodological role of fiction, the author shows how Rousseau builds a historiography rooted in the “moral causes”, which shifts the interest from customs understood as habits to manners understood as collective tendencies. The aim is to demonstrate the incapability of Rousseau’s history of being a parrhesiastic act.
