The essay analyses the relationship of Albertino Mussato (1261-1329) with emperor Henry VII and his wife, Margaret of Brabant, through a close reading of Mussato’s literary works both in prose and in verse (De gestis Henrici VII Cesaris; De gestis Italicorum post Henricum VII Cesarem; Epistole; Carmina). Throughout his journey to Rome and even after his death, the emperor played a fundamental role as a driving force for Mussato’s literary writing and for his perception of himself both as an historian and as a poet.
