Abstract

Battery Management Systems (BMSs) for Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) and Fuel Cells (FCs) are intrinsically different from BMSs for solid-state batteries, e.g. Li-ion, lead-acid etc.. . ., due to the different structures, operating principles, critical conditions and the literature on these topics is exiguous. This chapter presents the fundamental functions and structure of BMSs for RFBs, including hardware and software features. It gives an example of a real case developed in LabVIEW environment, designed for an industrial-scale all-vanadium RFB. The control issues of Proton Exchange Membrane FCs, in terms of temperature, reactant supply, water and power electronic management are also presented.
