The Ethics and Epistemology of Trust in Distributed Systems

The thesisi focuses on the analysis of the occurrences of e-trust in distributed artificial systems. it first proivdes a review of the existing literature. The review allows for the identificatio of four problems, which are addressed in the thesis. The problems are; -The definition of e-trust -The occurence of e-trust in digital environments -The role of e-trust in informative and epistemic processes occurring in a distributed system -The relation between e-trust and ethics The first and second problems are addressed in chapter one, where a theoretical analysis and a new definition of e-trust are provided. The third problem is solved in chapter three. it is argued that e-trust facilitates the communication of information and knolwledge among the agents of a system. The fourth problme is the topic of chapter four, where it is shown the ethical nature of e-trust and is provided a theoretical framework for its analysis. Such a framework has benn developed on the basis of the Information Ethics. The conclusions are devoted to underline the main contributions of this thesis to the debate on e-trust and to consider possible developments of the research presented in this thesis.

La tesi presenta un'analisi del fenomenon dell'e-trust tra gli agenti di un sistema artificiale. Si fornisce prma di tutto una rassegna della letteratura sull'e-trust. Tale rasseggna permette di evidenziare quattro problemi. -La definizione di e-trust -La possibilita' che l'e-trust occorra in contesti digitali -Il ruolo dell'e-trust nei processi informativi ed epistemici occorrenti in costesti digitali -La relazione tra e-trust e etica Tali problemi sono analizzati nel resto della tesi. Il secondo capitolo presenta le soluzioni al primo e al secondo problema introducendo una nuova analisi concettuale del fenomeno dellìe-trust. Il terzo capitlo risolve il terzo problea, mostrando che l'e-trust facilita la comunicazione di informazione e conoscenza nei contesti digitali. Il quarto capitolo risolve il quarto problema descrivendo la natura etica dell'e-trust e introducendo un contesto teorico per la sua analisi. Tale contesto si basa sull' Etica dell'Informazione. Le conclusioni descrivono i contributi di questa tesi all'analisi dell'e-trust e i suoi possibili sviluppi.
