The research concerns the problem of the union which exists between the human body and soul. In the Latin West between the second half of the XII and the first half of the XIII century, the debate about this question is determined above all by two exigencies: first, the need to preserve the unity of man; second, the need to defend the immortality of the soul. Accordingly, the dissertation is divided into two main parts. The first one concentrates on those aspects of the anthropology of the XII and XIII century that emphasize the unity of man. In this section two doctrines are analyzed: first, the theory of the unibilitas substantialis; second, the concept of person in its anthropological aspect. The second part of the work concerns some doctrines which tend to accentuate the anthropological dualism. First of all, it contains a study of the debate about the identity of the soul with its rational potencies; second, it considers the problem of the ontological status of the vegetative and sensitive potencies and the question if these potencies survive after death. The final part of our work concerns the rational and the sensitive memory, especially the problem of its immortality. The study is based on the theological texts of Hugh of St.-Cher and of his contemporaries. The appendix of the dissertation contains the first edition of Hugh's Commentary on Peter Lombard's Sentences I, 3 and of six quaestiones disputatae written in the first half of the XIII century.

Abstract
The appendix of the dissertation contains the first edition of Hugh's Commentary on Peter Lombard's Sentences I, 3 and of six quaestiones disputatae written in the first half of the XIII century.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
