Pavimenti antichi della Campania (fine IV a.C./III a.C.- VI d.C.): contesti, tecniche e repertori decorativi

The present work is a part of a wider research project, the so-called TESS Project, which is aimed at cataloguing the entire repertoire of mosaics of Ancient Italy by means of an online database. Within this framework, the present PhD dissertation focuses on the whole of Campania Region but the sites of the Vesuvian area, with a chronological horizon ranging from the beginning of the Hellenistic Era (to which the very first mosaics to be found in Campania actually date back) to the end of the Sixth Century AD. The choice of this large and extremely complex geographical area is mainly due to its centrality and importance in the elaboration, development and diffusion of the decorative repertoire of mosaics in both the Northern and the Southern parts of Italy throughout the Antiquity. The final goal of this research is to verify, based on the collected data, the extent and characteristics of this contribution in comparison with the artistic trends and the cultural features of the different periods which are here taken into account. In the first part of the study I will thus deal with the analysis of the techniques of the mosaic production as well as the decorative motifs and features of the time span here considered. In the second part, instead, I shall focus on the analysis and reassessment of the collected data from both the spatial and chronological standpoints, in order to try to further our knowledge of the mosaic culture of the individual parts of the Region.

Il presente lavoro si inserisce in un più ampio progetto di ricerca, denominato Progetto TESS, finalizzato alla schedatura, mediante un database on line, dell’intero patrimonio musivo e pavimentale dell’Italia. Oggetto specifico di questa analisi è la regione Campania, ad esclusione del comparto vesuviano, indagata in tutta la sua interezza all’interno di un arco cronologico che si estende dal primo ellenismo, periodo al quale riferire le prime pavimentazioni note, al VI sec. d.C. La scelta del territorio, vasto ed eterogeneo, è motivata dalla centralità e dall’importanza che questo riveste nell’elaborazione e nella diffusione del repertorio decorativo pavimentale sia verso le regioni centro-settentrionali che meridionali della Penisola, nel corso dei secoli. Lo scopo di questa ricerca è verificare, sulla base del dato materiale, l’entità e la centralità di questo contributo in relazione alle mode e agli influssi culturali caratteristici delle diverse epoche. Partendo dai dati raccolti nel database on line TESS, la prima parte del lavoro è dedicata all’analisi delle tecniche pavimentali e dei motivi decorativi ad esse relativi. La seconda parte prevede l’elaborazione dei dati raccolti e l’analisi diacronica del campione al fine di individuare, epoca per epoca, la cultura musiva del territorio.
