In this essay, we provide a brief introduction to the big data phenomenon. We quantify the impressive growth observed (and projected) in the amount of digital data available world-wide, and point out the computational challenges that their analysis poses. Also, we outline the hardware-software platforms and algorithmic techniques which are most suited to efficiently process datasets characterized by high volumes, high velocity, high variability, and non-uniform veracity.
