This essay lays the groundwork for a research programme on housing that will exploit several topical issues regarding contemporary urbanisation and civilisation to produce what is believed to be a productive and beneficial comparative international approach. It will initially focus on problems that are difficult to tackle from a disciplinary and political point of view: migrations; reception by and insertion in the population; a housing demand unmet by the market; demographic trends; informal and illegal settlements; energy transition; and the consequences of climate change on humans. In particular, it will concentrate on available aggregate data in three macroregions, and those who produce it: the European Union, especially the countries in Southern Europe, North Africa, and sub-Saharan West Africa.
