The paper deals with the question concerning the ontological status of prime matter, by taking into account two opposite medieval interpretations of the Augustinian conception of corporalis materia (notably, the interpretations proposed by two Franciscan thinkers of the first half of 14th century: Johan Duns Scotus and Peter Auriol). The analysis aims at verifying whether, and to what extent, Augustine’s doctrine can be properly understood according to these different theoretical paradigms.

Abstract
The paper deals with the question concerning the ontological status of prime matter, by taking into account two opposite medieval interpretations of the Augustinian conception of corporalis materia (notably, the interpretations proposed by two Franciscan thinkers of the first half of 14th century: Johan Duns Scotus and Peter Auriol). The analysis aims at verifying whether, and to what extent, Augustine’s doctrine can be properly understood according to these different theoretical paradigms.File in questo prodotto:
