Un Être en marche, poème épique is a wide poem by Jules Romains, the founder of Unanimism, first published in 1910 by Mercure de France. It can be said an ambulatory poem, that is a kind of poem which was to become popular in France a few years later thanks to Cendrars (Pâques à New Yok) and Apollinaire (Zone). Moreover, as it tells urban and suburban walking and travelling, it stands mainly for a Space poetry against the traditional hegemony of Time. While illustrating Unanimism, this poem gives voice and shape to collective heroes – both human and zoological groups – by using the present tenses throughout its 1290 lines. This paper finds out a relevant number of textual affinities with some important prose writings by Rousseau and Baudelaire, thus showing a thematic continuity from Promeneur to Marcheur. This kinetic poem is finally considered in its dissenting views toward Bergson, whose teaching was very popular among young poets at the beginning of Twentieth Century.
