Calling is a multi-dimensional construct that describes affective, motivational, spiritual, and identity-related facets of the relationship between individuals and specific domains in life or work. In a sample of 5886 college students, we tested the longitudinal relationship between the experience of having a calling, the experience of engagement in learning activities, the clarity of their professional identity, and the presence of a supportive social environment. Contrary to common expectations, this study showed that the sense of having a calling is a consequence of a positive experience in calling domain. Specifically, social support, engagement in learning and clarity of professional identity were found to increase the sense of having a calling over time.

Abstract
Calling is a multi-dimensional construct that describes affective, motivational, spiritual, and identity-related facets of the relationship between individuals and specific domains in life or work. In a sample of 5886 college students, we tested the longitudinal relationship between the experience of having a calling, the experience of engagement in learning activities, the clarity of their professional identity, and the presence of a supportive social environment. Contrary to common expectations, this study showed that the sense of having a calling is a consequence of a positive experience in calling domain. Specifically, social support, engagement in learning and clarity of professional identity were found to increase the sense of having a calling over time.Pubblicazioni consigliate
