Over the past decade, there has emerged a mass of new archaeological and environmental data on late antique rural settlement, resulting from excavations and surveys, as well as new methods of analysis. This paper highlights key examples of archaeological evidence for settlement and land use in well-investigated regions of the West Mediterranean, which can serve as case studies to compare with other evidence, in an effort to contribute to a picture based on multiple viewpoints of human interactions with the environment in Late Antiquity.
