This paper attempts to describe some methodological aspects relating to the work of transcription of the first Spanish grammar explicitly addressed to an Italian public, viz., Il Paragone della lingua toscana et castigliana by Alessandri d’Urbino, published in Naples in 1560. The specific methodology we have adopted for the realization of the edition of Il paragone is aimed at preserving the predominantly pedagogical nature of this bilingual grammar, whose didactic function offers a key to the interpretation of the linguistic and textual facts described by the author. After a brief overview of the text, this study gives a great deal of attention to some relevant orthographic and paragraphematic issues i.e. the transcription of the graphemes u/v in uncertain contexts or the treatment of punctuation marks and accents.
