In the framework of a study of the production processes connected to the “building industry” in the socio-economic and political reality of Siena between the end of the 13th and the first half of the 14th century, the article proposes an initial quantitative analysis of the building materials used in the Baptistery and in one section of the city's outer walls, with particular attention to aspects linked to the supply, transportation and costs, and the time required for construction, and how buildings were constructed. The research provided interesting information on how the raw materials were obtained, and the quantity of material needed to allow progress on constructions, vital aspects in the organization of building work.
