The epigraphical evidences, together with many other kinds of sources, improve by far the knowledge about the ancient hydraulic systems and the comprehension of the perception the citizens had of them. The paper deals with the different typologies of epigraphical documents about water in the Roman world. In particular it points out the relation between the power and the hydraulic structures, in the perspective of the legislative proceedings but also of the funding of their construction. Moreover the epigraphs give to modern scholars a wide frame concerning technical issues, but also administrative themes, such as the water distribution within the cities.
