In 2012, the European Union published its bioeconomy strategy and action plan. Many Member States worked wothout coordination and produced national strategies that are detached from the EU strategy. Whether and how forests are addressed in these strategies differ between the various countries considerably. The contribution identifies and compares the role of forests and forest-sectors in national bioeconomy strategies in 4 countries (Finland, France, Italy and Lithuania) and in the EU, providing some insights on the current state of research.
