The paper is focused on Roman pyres and examines different kind of sources in order to retrace shape, dimensions, composition and management of the cremation stacks. Iconographic sources are taken into account, beginning with several pyre-shape funerary monuments discovered in North-Eastern Italy. Dated to the 1st century AD, they seem a mere local production. A comparison is proposed with other depictions coming from both Greek and Roman world, followed by the analysis of literary and epigraphic texts. At the end, archaeological sources are considered: the review is centered on some exceptional findings from Padua, highlighting the affinity with modern cremation stacks. Finally, a connection is suggested between the appearance of the pyre-shape monuments and the spread of busta-type cremations.
