The importance of designing effective organizations for Mass Customization (MC) has been long recognized, but no studies have explicitly focused on the role of Employee Involvement (EI) in MC contexts. Further, although the Degree of Product Customization (DPC) that a firm aims to provide has been widely acknowledged as a key decision when a company decides to pursue an MC strategy, few studies have considered this contingency variable. This paper contributes to MC literature by developing and empirically testing hypotheses regarding EI impact on MC capability from a contingency perspective. We find that EI is appropriate for MC but its value is contingent on the DPC provided to customers.

Abstract
The importance of designing effective organizations for Mass Customization (MC) has been long recognized, but no studies have explicitly focused on the role of Employee Involvement (EI) in MC contexts. Further, although the Degree of Product Customization (DPC) that a firm aims to provide has been widely acknowledged as a key decision when a company decides to pursue an MC strategy, few studies have considered this contingency variable. This paper contributes to MC literature by developing and empirically testing hypotheses regarding EI impact on MC capability from a contingency perspective. We find that EI is appropriate for MC but its value is contingent on the DPC provided to customers.Pubblicazioni consigliate
