Scholars have often dealt with the anti-Jewish polemic in Chromatius of Aquileia with opposing outcomes: on one side, those who argue that the Bishop refers to the Jews of Aquileia; on the other, those who consider that the polemical target is a ‘theological’ Jew. The A. analyses Chromatius’ Sermones and Tractatus in Matheum in order to highlight the traditional themes and the linguistic and stylistic ways through which the Aquileian Bishop constructs this controversy; and concludes that the frequent references to the Jews is directed not to fight a real enemy, but rather to strengthen the faith of Christians.

Abstract
Scholars have often dealt with the anti-Jewish polemic in Chromatius of Aquileia with opposing outcomes: on one side, those who argue that the Bishop refers to the Jews of Aquileia; on the other, those who consider that the polemical target is a ‘theological’ Jew. The A. analyses Chromatius’ Sermones and Tractatus in Matheum in order to highlight the traditional themes and the linguistic and stylistic ways through which the Aquileian Bishop constructs this controversy; and concludes that the frequent references to the Jews is directed not to fight a real enemy, but rather to strengthen the faith of Christians.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
