This paper aims to provide empirical insights regarding the role of different actors involved in the management of SME networks throughout the different phases of their development process and the influence over network success. This issue belongs to the recent scope of analysis developed around SME networks and responds to an explicit call for research concerning their management which, on the one hand, may play a significant role for SME continuous innovation, and, on the other hand, has not received much academic attention. A qualitative analysis based on multiple case studies has been carried out in order to compare successful and unsuccessful cases. Results emerging from case studies prove that the presence of a heavyweight SME network manager possessing specific skills is fundamental for SME network success.
