Carl Joachim Classen, one of the most relevant German classical scholars of the 20th century, died on 29 September 2013, aged 85. This paper provides an account of his career, his main scientific achievements and approaches. His studies in Hamburg, Göttingen und Oxford under the leadership of Bruno Snell, Kurt Latte and Eric R. Dodds are retraced, and his extraordinary experience as a Lecturer of Classics in Ibadan (Nigeria), up to his return to Germany (Berlin, Würzburg, Göttingen). This eventful life made Professor Classen a promoter of international cooperation, and an eye-witness of a half-century of history of classical scholarship. His main scientific interests included Philosophy, Roman Satire, History of Rhetoric from the Classical Antiquity to the Renaissance, History of moral values in the Greek and Roman worlds.
