The author illustrates the historiography of Venice in the years 1930-1960 and the strong influence of its chief exponent, Roberto Cessi. His studies of the relationship between Venice and the Adriatic region, in particular, had a long-lasting influence. Only recently have Cessi’s interpretative models been outweighed by the contributions of a new generation of historians. Abstract
