Abstract

Based on available sources, the author outlines the economic and social picture (period 1250-1340) of the main Istrian cities whichDante Alighieri indicated as the terminal point of linguistic and cultural Italy. It is a context inserted within Northernmost Adriatic increasingly gravitating towards Venice which extended its sovereignty in the Istrian coast from 1267 to 1331. Municipal Istria is entirely integrated, but it is distinguished from its hinterland, central-eastern part of the peninsula, marked by co-existence of the Slavic and the Romanic linguistic dimensions.
