Starting from a brief outline about the traditional historiography concerning the topic of the Tridentine strengthening of the episcopal functions and power among the Catholic Church, the auhor introduces some critical remarks to this kind of standard view, showing how, in the Venetian State of the XVIIth century – that’s to say more than a century after the ending of the Council – a very important and engaged bishop as cardinal Gregorio Barbarigo in Padua (1664-1697), had huge problems to affirm and to practise his authority, face to the society – both lay and religious -, to the public powers, and to the papal influence itself.
