Academic book blurbs are a review genre with a promotional orientation subject to strict space constraints. An analysis of 80 texts from five disciplines shows how their goal is achieved through the presentation of partial (i.e. non-thorough and positively biased) information, which signals what can be gained from the books (choice of content), and through overt and covert evaluative strategies (lexical choices and information focus). Throughout, the persuasive strategy adopted involves an appeal to reason, targeting readers’ professional needs.

Abstract
Academic book blurbs are a review genre with a promotional orientation subject to strict space constraints. An analysis of 80 texts from five disciplines shows how their goal is achieved through the presentation of partial (i.e. non-thorough and positively biased) information, which signals what can be gained from the books (choice of content), and through overt and covert evaluative strategies (lexical choices and information focus). Throughout, the persuasive strategy adopted involves an appeal to reason, targeting readers’ professional needs.File in questo prodotto:
