The effects of scour deepening around large diameter bored piles, used often as bridge foundations, are mainly the redistribution of shear stresses along the shaft, the increase of horizontal pressure on the pile load due to the variation of water flow and, eventually, the swelling of the surrounding soil. These effects on the overall behaviour of piles are analyzed and discussed in the paper using a three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element approach.

Abstract

The effects of scour deepening around large diameter bored piles, used often as bridge foundations, are mainly the redistribution of shear stresses along the shaft, the increase of horizontal pressure on the pile load due to the variation of water flow and, eventually, the swelling of the surrounding soil. These effects on the overall behaviour of piles are analyzed and discussed in the paper using a three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element approach.
