This paper deals with the design of a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor operating in a propulsion system of a small ship. The SPM motor is installed in a submersed bulb provided of a propeller. The particular location of the motor together with the very high torque-to-volume ratio required by this application need an accurate coupled magnetic and thermal analysis. The analysis uses both an analytical and a finite elements model. In addition, some experimental results confirm the goodness of the analysis on the SPM motor.

Abstract
This paper deals with the design of a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor operating in a propulsion system of a small ship. The SPM motor is installed in a submersed bulb provided of a propeller. The particular location of the motor together with the very high torque-to-volume ratio required by this application need an accurate coupled magnetic and thermal analysis. The analysis uses both an analytical and a finite elements model. In addition, some experimental results confirm the goodness of the analysis on the SPM motor.File in questo prodotto:
