In a continuously increasing number of cases, Aluminium foundries are required to offer not simply a cast product, but a component, satisfying various specifications and recommendations. In various applications, the painting of castings becomes fundamental for aesthetics or functional reasons. This work presents a study which is going on, supported by UNIMET, aimed at the set up of an Italian Standard about the painting of castings. Different kinds of variables have been selected and investigated (alloy composition, casting process, pre-painting treatment), in order to understand their effects on the reliability of painted coating. Such results are being used for defining the guidelines to be adopted in ordering and carrying out painting treatments on Aluminium alloys castings.
