The development of a methodology to study problems associated with the transportation of hazardous materials must be considered a very important target for risk analysis. For this scope an innovative procedure has been created, which represents the framework of the TRAT2 software. In this paper, after briefly outlining the main features of TRAT2, its application to the land transport of dangerous goods through the downtown of Messina is outlined. A detailed description is given of the rail and road networks, of the hazardous materials flows, of the population distribution which characterise Messina; then results about a preliminary evaluation of both individual and societal risk are shown. Finally future improvements of TRAT2 and major research developments in hazardous materials transportation risk analysis are presented and discussed.
