Engineering structure, such as tanks and silos, are subjected to cyclic loading during their lifetime. Periodic loading and unloading causes consolidation settlements, the evolution of which with time depends on the permeability and the thickness of the clay layer, as well as on the shape of the load-tima curva. This paper presents a simplified consolidation theory in cyclic loading conditions, based on the extension of the linear solution for 1D compression. It assumes that both coefficient of consolidation cv and volume compressibility mv are constant: this can only be satisfied in the case of homoheneous OC cohesive solis.

Abstract

Engineering structure, such as tanks and silos, are subjected to cyclic loading during their lifetime. Periodic loading and unloading causes consolidation settlements, the evolution of which with time depends on the permeability and the thickness of the clay layer, as well as on the shape of the load-tima curva. This paper presents a simplified consolidation theory in cyclic loading conditions, based on the extension of the linear solution for 1D compression. It assumes that both coefficient of consolidation cv and volume compressibility mv are constant: this can only be satisfied in the case of homoheneous OC cohesive solis.
