Over the past few decades there has been a growing interest among researchers in the influence of diet on skin health. The conclusions of the studies about the contributory role of food on the development of acne are often contradictory. In the course of years the general opinion among researchers has oscillated between two different, opposite position: food is a key factor for acne development or, on the contrary, food isn’t involved. This review examines the role of various foods on the development of acne particularly focusing on carbohydrates. From that prospective we’ve analyzed the physiological and biochemical bases of the ketogenic diet. Finally we suggest the theoretical mechanisms through which this kind of nutritional approach could find a role in acne treatment.
