A multibiomarker approach was applied in biomonitoring the Lagoon of Venice using the crab Carcinus aestuarii. Three biochemical responses were evaluated: vitellogenin-like protein induction, acethylcholinesterase and ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD) activities. Although different responses have been obtained depending on the specificity of the biomarker, the results suggest a general homogeneity in contamination level among sites.

Abstract

A multibiomarker approach was applied in biomonitoring the Lagoon of Venice using the crab Carcinus aestuarii. Three biochemical responses were evaluated: vitellogenin-like protein induction, acethylcholinesterase and ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD) activities. Although different responses have been obtained depending on the specificity of the biomarker, the results suggest a general homogeneity in contamination level among sites.
