By reaction of tin or germanium tetrachloride with N,N-dimethylselenourea (dmsu) in benzene the complexes SnCl4 . 2dmsu and GeCl4 . 3dmsu have been obtained. Organotin halides form with the same ligand the species R(2)SnCl(2) . dmsu (R = Me or Ph), Me(2)SnBr(2) . n dmsu (n = 1 or 2) and MeSnCl(3) . 2dmsu, whereas either Me(2)GeCl(2) and MeGeCl(3) are unreacted. Analogous reactions with selenourea (su), which generally gives less stable products, are discussed. The complexes have been characterized by IR and proton NMR spectroscopy and by thermogravimetric data (TG and DTA) and their characteristics have been correlated to those of the cadmium and mercury adducts MCl(2) . n dmsu (M = Cd or Hg; n = 1 or 2).
