This article first discusses the various criteria for and scopes of the language codes registered at ISO 639-1, 639-2, 639-3 and 639-6. It then introduces RFC 5646 and RFC 4647 in order to explain how well-formed language tags can be created. Finally, the case of applying for a language code for Resian is summarized. The resistance to this proposal encountered within Slovenia is due to the failure to distinguish between a noun or the abbreviation thereof and the concept this noun refers to. Thus it was thought that by having an ISO 639 language code for a dialect the said dialect would automatically become a language.

Abstract
This article first discusses the various criteria for and scopes of the language codes registered at ISO 639-1, 639-2, 639-3 and 639-6. It then introduces RFC 5646 and RFC 4647 in order to explain how well-formed language tags can be created. Finally, the case of applying for a language code for Resian is summarized. The resistance to this proposal encountered within Slovenia is due to the failure to distinguish between a noun or the abbreviation thereof and the concept this noun refers to. Thus it was thought that by having an ISO 639 language code for a dialect the said dialect would automatically become a language.File in questo prodotto:
