Tbis work demonstrates the good results which may be obtained in diagnosing gear defects using a technique based on monitoring of shaft motion combined with analysis of the spectrum of the cepstrum of the acquired signal. The former is carried out using laser sensors, which have the advantage of being able to measure vibrations very near the gear, thus minimizing the influence of the natural vibrations of the support. Analysis of the spectrum of the cepstrum is effective in highlighting the periodicity of the diagnostic signal, since the non-periodic components in the spectrum (particularly those regarding support frequencies) are reduced by means of a Fourier triple transform. The technique was tested on a specially designed and constructed gear in which known characteristic defects were generated. Its sensitivity with respect to other traditional techniques is discussed.
