The aim of this cross sectional population study was to investigate the quality of life among people living in Vigonovo, a small town near Venice (Italy), aged 75 y. or more, i.e. the age group most likely to suffer from underlying psychological and physical conditions that interfere with self-sufficiency. Each subject included in the survey answered a precoded questionnaire delivered by trained personnel. The questionnaire was divided into two sections: the first included personal and socio-economic data; the second concerned socio-sanitary and relational conditions. The study population included 232 elderly people (76 males and 156 females). Our data suggest that the sense of well-being and health are not significantly influenced by the fact of living alone or in company, and people living alone tend to be in better health. The general living conditions of the elderly in Vigonovo can be considered satisfactory. Most of the difficulties concern the loss of good health and of social and economic self-sufficiency. The outcome of this study emphasizes the importance of the family in a care-giving function, leaving a marginal role for the public health or social services.

Abstract
The outcome of this study emphasizes the importance of the family in a care-giving function, leaving a marginal role for the public health or social services.Pubblicazioni consigliate
