In this chapter we study the case of Italian subcontractors. Firstly, we apply cluster analysis to a sample of 417 North East Italian subcontractors to explore whether (and to what extent) Italian subcontractors differ and can be classified on the basis of their design and marketing capabilities. Secondly, using this classification as a baseline, we analyse data from ten in-depth subcontractors’ case studies, to develop a model of the way subcontractors’ capabilities coevolve over time.

Abstract

In this chapter we study the case of Italian subcontractors. Firstly, we apply cluster analysis to a sample of 417 North East Italian subcontractors to explore whether (and to what extent) Italian subcontractors differ and can be classified on the basis of their design and marketing capabilities. Secondly, using this classification as a baseline, we analyse data from ten in-depth subcontractors’ case studies, to develop a model of the way subcontractors’ capabilities coevolve over time.
