The book, in addition to a broad review of the literature on children’s knowledge, beliefs and feelings about nations and national groups, presents the findings from two cross-national comparative research projects, which have been conducted by the collective authorships of the book. The projects involved 4211children aged 6, 9, 12, and 15 years, living in a number of different European countries (included Italy), who were all individually interviewed. This chapter focuses on findings on children’s subjective identification with their own nations and states. One of the major findings to emerge from these projects is the variability that occurs in children’s development. The data show that children’s national and state identifications varies as function of many different factors, including their country, their geographical location within their country, how the state category is interpreted within the local environment, their ethnicity, their use of language in the family home, and their language of schooling.

Abstract
The book, in addition to a broad review of the literature on children’s knowledge, beliefs and feelings about nations and national groups, presents the findings from two cross-national comparative research projects, which have been conducted by the collective authorships of the book. The projects involved 4211children aged 6, 9, 12, and 15 years, living in a number of different European countries (included Italy), who were all individually interviewed. This chapter focuses on findings on children’s subjective identification with their own nations and states. One of the major findings to emerge from these projects is the variability that occurs in children’s development. The data show that children’s national and state identifications varies as function of many different factors, including their country, their geographical location within their country, how the state category is interpreted within the local environment, their ethnicity, their use of language in the family home, and their language of schooling.Pubblicazioni consigliate
