The research illustrated in this paper finds space within a broader interest in the social representation of ageing, and in its links with concepts such as Successful Ageing, Active Ageing and Positive Aging. The Successful Ageing perspective has been advanced in a psychological framework and underlines individual variability and intra-individual plasticity within the ageing process, searching for coping strategies which enhance gains over losses. The concept of Active Ageing has been proposed by the WHO as a new strategic view of ageing referring to continuity of participation within the social, cultural, spiritual and civic life and not just to physical aspects of activity by the elderly. The Positive Aging approach has been introduced by Gergen and Gergen, within a social constructionist perspective, in order to counterbalance studies and models which focus on deteriorative aspects of ageing with studies and research enhancing the potential of growth and development, well-being and satisfaction also present in elderly people’s lives. The presentation focuses on empirical data regarding the social representation of ageing, old age and the elderly, exploring age and generation as key elements, and discussing the topics in the above-mentioned debate.
