While reverse items are normally considered to be the opposite of straight items, research has shown this not to be the case. This paper begins with a review of the literature on the effects of item wording direction. It then focuses on a widely used self-report scale and investigates the effects of wording direction both on the dimensionality and on the functioning of the response categories.

Abstract

While reverse items are normally considered to be the opposite of straight items, research has shown this not to be the case. This paper begins with a review of the literature on the effects of item wording direction. It then focuses on a widely used self-report scale and investigates the effects of wording direction both on the dimensionality and on the functioning of the response categories.
