Abstract

In this paper, a study on the different constructive solutions of roof structures in the Arsenale of Venice is presented. The “Arsenale” of Venice was a naval shipyard that played a leading role in the Venetian republic for many centuries, representing now a large monumental complex of exceptional historical value. The roof structures were influenced by the use of the warehouse. In particular, the roof structures were structurally modified and updated along the centuries in order to satisfy the needs of the evolution of the shipbuilding industry. In fact, the roofs became part of the “industrial machine” for the construction of ships using sophisticated and specialized production process. The maintenance interventions introduced new elements and substantial changes in the structural behaviour.
