The paper examines different control strategies for a VAWT drive. A technique is also proposed for a sensorless application allowing to maximize the output power up to the rated wind speed and to satisfy the mechanical and SPMG heating constraints in the higher wind speed range profiting, at the same time, by high wind speed periods. The results of the implementation of this strategy based on an equivalent circuit model of the whole VAWT drive confirm its effectiveness.

Abstract

The paper examines different control strategies for a VAWT drive. A technique is also proposed for a sensorless application allowing to maximize the output power up to the rated wind speed and to satisfy the mechanical and SPMG heating constraints in the higher wind speed range profiting, at the same time, by high wind speed periods. The results of the implementation of this strategy based on an equivalent circuit model of the whole VAWT drive confirm its effectiveness.
