Abstract – This paper deals with the analysis of a interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous motor, characterized by a fractional number of slots per pole per phase. Such a configuration yields to reduced Joule losses and high torque density. A low torque ripple is achieved, especially compared with classical PM motors with an integer number of stator slots per pole per phase. In addition, the motor exhibits high performance both during overload as well as flux-weakening operations.
