The paper presents a methodology for the electromagnetic analysis and the design of permanent magnet in-wheel motors for the propulsion of electric buses. The methodology is applied to radial, axial and transverse flux magnetic configurations and it is able to take into account the different motor geometries as well as the design techniques for the performance evaluation. After the formulation of the constraints on the design variables, the criteria for the execution of the parametric analysis are discussed, with particular reference to the identification of an optimal configuration in terms of torque performance. Finally a non-linear mathematical model is defined to simulate the motor performance in dynamical conditions. Some significant results obtained by using the methodology are presented in the example of application.
