Abstract - The Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) motor drive is an interesting solution for several applications and it is becoming a competitor for the comnionly-used S u r f a c e niounted PM motor. In this paper, some design criteria of this kind of motor are presented, focusing on the high performance applications. Different aspects in its design a r e presented, highlighting the main applications in which it presents the best performance: high-torque, low inertia, high dynamics. Thanks to the anisotropy of the rotor, this kind of niotor is suitable for flux-weakening operations, thus it is used for high-speed applications such as machine tools or electrical vehicles. Several details and experimental results also included in the paper.
