Metacognition is one important facet of human intelligence but it is also the aspect of intelligence that can be more easily promoted by education. The present chapter examine this issue on the basis of a cognitive model of intelligence. The model is presented in the first section, followed by an examination of the implications of the model for education and academic learning and a description of the place of metacognition in the model. In the final section, I present some data supporting the model, discuss group differences in intellectual functioning, and offer some educational implications of the model, in particular with reference to metacognition. Throughout the entire chapter, data and examples are focused on different categories of exceptional children.
