Abstract
Late antique villas, not the sole bur the most characteristic type of settlement, were already abandoned in the course of the 5th century, as a consequence of the generalised disappearance of the old aristocracy. The srudy of rural cult buildings demonstrates the extent to which the foundation of churches was connected to the general evolution of settlement structures and to the political and economic context. The objective of the present text is the analysis of Italian archaeological evidence related to churches and villas to demonstrate that, as has already been observed in relation to other areas of Europe, an in-depth and a critical analysis of these sites reveals how in general these churches were usually erected after the main occupational phase of the villas.Pubblicazioni consigliate
