The Italian standards UNI CNR 10011 and UNI 8634 dealing with the design of steel and aluminium alloy structures have been substituted by Eurocode 3 (EN 1993) and Eurocode 9 (EN 1999), respectively. Although the fatigue strength data are presented in a similar fashion for the two European standards, in the case of Eurocode 9 the slope of the fatigue curves is not constant for different detail categories, differently from the case of steel structures. In the present work the methodologies for fatigue design following EN 1993 and EN 1999 standards are presented and analysed. Finally, the possibility to improve both the Eurocodes is considered, by using the approaches presented in the literature in the last 20 years.
