This paper proposes a model for the study of paths of improvement towards World Class Manufacturing (WCM). This model considers initiatives for improvement, company characteristics and operative performance (cost, time and quality). Through an empirical study carried out on 33 manufacturing companies operating on the international markets, four different paths of improvement characterised in terms of sequences, diffusion and year of implementation of the improvement initiatives are identified. These paths are also examined in relation to the company performance and characteristics associated with the paths identified.

Abstract

This paper proposes a model for the study of paths of improvement towards World Class Manufacturing (WCM). This model considers initiatives for improvement, company characteristics and operative performance (cost, time and quality). Through an empirical study carried out on 33 manufacturing companies operating on the international markets, four different paths of improvement characterised in terms of sequences, diffusion and year of implementation of the improvement initiatives are identified. These paths are also examined in relation to the company performance and characteristics associated with the paths identified.
