This paper deals with the theme of compatibility between different operative types of performance, in relation to the areas of quality, costs, time and profitability. The logic of trade-offs based on the theory of the focused factory is compared to the multiple performance strategy of the World Class Manufacturing approach. The concepts of trade-off and compatibility are also discussed. An empirical study is carried out on a sample of thirty three manufacturing companies. From data analysis it seems to be confirmed that compatibility among multiple types of performance does exist.

Abstract

This paper deals with the theme of compatibility between different operative types of performance, in relation to the areas of quality, costs, time and profitability. The logic of trade-offs based on the theory of the focused factory is compared to the multiple performance strategy of the World Class Manufacturing approach. The concepts of trade-off and compatibility are also discussed. An empirical study is carried out on a sample of thirty three manufacturing companies. From data analysis it seems to be confirmed that compatibility among multiple types of performance does exist.
